It's been quite the year for sports in Portage! It seems like no matter where you looked, high school or college, there were people and teams doing incredible things in The Region. We scoured the archives and put together a list of our top 10 sports articles for the year.

IU Northwest's Nicki Monahan Named 2014-15 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball All-American

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2015 Division II Women’s Basketball All-America Teams with Indiana University Northwest’s Nicki Monahan selected to the third team. This was the first selection NAIA All-American selection for the RedHawks sophomore guard from Portage, IN (Portage HS).

This past season Monahan averaged 18.4 points per game and ranked seventh in the nation in field throw percentage at 88.4%. She started and scored in double-figures in all 31 games (18-13) for the RedHawks this season.

When he was young, Noah Simmons’ grandfather told him, “Do what you love”. Since that time, Simmons, a 2015 graduate of Portage High School, has done exactly that.

He feels right at home and truly loves his job as the Head Groundskeeper for the Gary Southshore Railcats.

The Portage High School Cheerleaders would like your support this year in helping them collect non-perishable food and hygiene-related items for the Portage Township Food Pantry.

The items will be collected during every home Varsity football game this year, and it starts with the Indians’ first home game this Friday (8/28) against Lowell.

High expectations are never easy to live up to. However, for Indiana Northwest Women’s Basketball, they wouldn’t want it any other way. The 2015-16 RedHawks are hoping to improve on last season’s 18-13 record and run to the A.I.I. Conference Semifinals as they return several key players and welcome a cast of talented newcomers.

Head coach Ryan Shelton, entering his ninth season, hopes that the integration of new talent and depth will position the team well to continue the level of success they’ve achieved.

The Portage Exchange Club welcomed some Outstanding PHS seniors at their Sept. 9 meeting. The category for September is Fall Athletes.

PHS Associate Administrator Max Gill introduced Elijah Fleming (boys soccer) and Matthew Elish (football). The two other students selected by the administration for this honor, Allison Clarke (girls soccer) and Kyra Ball (girls cross country), were unable to attend the meeting.

Girls can aspire to be anything. Girls can break into whatever they want to. Girls can be a part of what men claim to be theirs. Football is no exception to those rules. When I was younger I never thought sports photography would be my “thing”.

I didn’t play a single sport in school. I only watched games with some interest growing up - having memories of watching baseball with my dad and not truly understanding the love my grandfather and mom had for NASCAR (I’m still trying to figure that one out).
