Portage High School Holds 2016 Winter Sports Awards Banquet

On Thursday, March 17th, the Winter Sports athletes of Portage High School gathered in the East Auditorium for their annual awards ceremony. Coaches, family, and friends cheered as their student was awarded a 4th year letter or an MVP recognition. Afterward, each sports division retreated to its own break out area for a more personal, specific ceremony.

“They need the recognition in front of their peers,” said Athletic Director Kelly Bermes. “It validates what they do and what they have worked so hard for.”

Dancer Alyssa Sweeney agreed that the Winter Awards ceremony reinforced her efforts for the school year. She won an award for her Mental Attitude, her Hip Hop skills, and received her 4 year letter.

“It reminded me of how hard I worked,” she said, “And how much I improved over the four years. Plus, [the ceremony] got us all together one last time to celebrate.”

Each coach took turns presenting trophies, letters, and plaques to his or her student athletes. Due to their generous involvement in National Helpers, some of the kids could not make it to the ceremony. Their accomplishments were still recognized.

Some of this year’s biggest achievements were the girl’s swim team getting 3rd in sectionals, the gymnastics team placing 4th at DAC, and the numerous Championships the Wrestling team won. This was the wrestling team’s first time winning semi-state since 2005. Kamryn Crosby of the boys’ swim team qualified for Regional Dive, and a few of the gymnasts qualified for regionals.

Dance coach Kristin Camry stressed the importance of athletics as part of the high school experience. “It lets them build a relationship with adults and other students in a different way than a classroom environment provides.”

It is hard work being a full time student and a successful athlete. The annual recognition is well earned.

Bermes said the ceremony is also a great way “to thank the seniors and their parents for their time.”
