May is National Older American Month. Since 1963, communities across the nation have come together to celebrate Older Americans Month—a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to recognizing the contributions and achievements of older Americans.
The theme for 2012 is “Never too old to Play.” In celebrating National Older Americans Month Rittenhouse Senior Living of Portage sponsored a patriotic themed Tea Party at the Merrillville Senior Center on Wednesday, May 9th.

On May 16, 2012 at 5:30p.m. professionals from 1st Source Bank will presenting “Servicing Seniors.” The topics will include: the importance of naming a personal representative and how to choose them, transferring wealth from generation to generation, Indiana probate rules and their pitfalls, gathering assets and the importance of titling, beneficiary reviews and many more.

Portage Mayor, James E. Snyder, and the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Senior Services invite you to the 12th Annual Portage Senior Health Fair on May 3rd, 2012, from 9 am-noon at Woodland Park Oakwood Hall. The Health Fair will host many vendors that promote and provide health care or services to Senior Adults.
Free health screenings, informational segments and demonstrations, and opportunities to win door prizes will be provided for those who attend this event. At noon a light luncheon will be available to Seniors.

"Some people are surprised to learn just how contagious they are when they're ill, which is one reason that viruses like the common cold spread so readily," explained Derek Gasper, DO, Family Medicine Physician with Glendale Primary Care.
"The good news is that many illnesses are preventable, either through vaccinations or by reducing our risk through healthy habits such as frequent hand washing," said Gasper. He advises all of his patients to get the annual flu shot and he recommends the one-time only pneumonia shot for patients 65 and older or those at added risk due to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or compromised immunity. The one-time only shingles vaccination is also recommended for those 60 and older. Plus, everyone needs a tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccination (Td/Tdap) every 10 years.
