South Haven Fire Department Hosts First Annual Homecoming Dance for Teens

Teens ages 13 to 17 got out their dresses and tuxes because the South Haven Fire Department held a homecoming dance. This was the first time they had held an event like this before.

We decided to have a dance for teens because we always have events for adults and younger children, but not a lot for the older kids, so we decided to do something for them,” South Haven Firefighter Ricky Medellin said.

While the fire department did not have any set expectations about the number of teens coming, the numbers were a little lower than hoped for.

We would like to make it an every year thing and hopefully next year’s numbers will be even better,” Medellin said.

Teens throughout the South Haven community do not have many opportunities to go to events, such as dances, and Captain Shane Thomas noticed that.

This is the kind of thing that the teens in the community need to keep them out of trouble,” Thomas said, “We want to get to the point where we have one [a dance] once a month.”

The band, “For Us Cool Kids” played for an hours and covered songs such as “Jessie’s Girl” and many more. Along with music, food was available for purchase as well.

I had a really great time and the music was great,” Taylor Quinn said, “I love being able to hang out with my friends and just dance crazy.”
