The Portage High School music department celebrated the holiday spirit as the orchestra performed difficult and joyful pieces for all to enjoy. The orchestra presented the annual holiday program on Tuesday evening at PHS’s auditorium. The beginning, intermediate, and advanced orchestras each performed a great number of holiday spirit-filled tunes to a full crowd. The concert was under the direction of Carrie-Ann Carlson, PHS’s head orchestra director, as she challenged her students with well-known holiday classics and very difficult arrangements.
“My kids have definitely been working extremely hard to prepare for tonight’s concert and I gave some pretty difficult pieces,” Carlson stated.
This was Portage High School’s 2nd concert of the school year, representing hard work and dedication from PHS’s highly talented student body. Each group of student musicians showcased improvements, as they continue to expand their musical knowledge and expressing themselves through music.
“I really enjoy being able to play with my friends while expressing myself with music,” Portage student Adam Garrido stated. “I’m excited to show the public what we’ve been working on and hear how much we’ve improved.”
With all the support from parents and dedication from the kids, an exceptional performance was indeed put on for the community that showcased everything great about the performing arts, and with Portage High School’s highly gifted youngsters in particular.
I really enjoy watching their hard work pay off,” said orchestra parent Sheila Yohl. “Because the kids are extremely dedicated here, and it shows in their music.”
Portage High School’s particular brand of dedication shined bright Tuesday evening, with students playing their hearts out to everyone’s favorite holiday music. The music injected itself into the hearts an minds of everyone listening, making spirits bright and giving everyone good cheer.
Portage High School has built a successful music department has built a strong music department and tonight was the night to showcase all the hard work from all involved. With holiday music filling the air at Portage High School, it’s clear to all that could hear that Christmastime has come to Northwest Indiana.
