Game after game, the boys and girls of the Region’s sports teams show how to face a challenge with grace, grit, and determination. When the Portage Indians walked onto the court Friday night for the varsity boy’s conference game against the Chesterton Trojans, they knew they had their work cut out for them. The Trojans showed up with strong stats and were eager to get to the top of the conference standings. Both teams were unrelenting in their resolve to win, but ultimately, the hard work and fierce spirit of the Trojans brought them to victory with a final score of 70-39.

In the wee hours of the morning, when most of the world is still asleep, high-school girls from schools all over the Region were hitting the pool, practicing their speed, agility, and technique to compete in Saturday's Sectional Championship Swimming Meet at Lake Central High School. Their extensive training, beginning months ago and including early morning practice, after-school drills, and training over winter break, prepared them for the few minutes at sectionals when they put their skills to the test to compete in their events.

Region Girls Basketball Teams Brave the Snow at the Annual IHSAA Sectional

Due to the record-breaking cold weather this past week, many Northwest Indiana’s girls' basketball sectionals were pushed back. So Friday night, teams from around the Region finally met at the IHSAA Girls Basketball Sectional at Merrillville High School to have a chance at the championship game on Monday night. This sectional consisted of 2 of the area's best teams, Michigan City and Kankakee Valley, but were challenged by other opposing teams: Chesterton, Portage, Merrillville, and Valparaiso. But no matter who came out on top, it was clear that all the teams gave it their all as they braved the cold for a chance at the top.

Time drops, tapering, flip turns, heats, and kicks may not mean something outside of swimming circles, but on the pool deck at Sectional preliminaries, you will hear all those phrases ring throughout. This year at Chesterton High School, teams including North Judson, Michigan City, La Porte, Portage, Valparaiso, Wheeler, Chesterton, Hobart, Calumet, Merrillville, and Knox came together on Friday night for prelims that determine who will be qualifying to the finals on Saturday.

The atmosphere was amped, the rivalries at their peak, and the girls were all ready to put a season-long drive to improve their strokes into performance across the individual events and team relays. When looking back on the most memorable experiences of high school, many people remember squeezing into bleachers with bags of popcorn as they rooted for their favorite team to rebound, dribble, and alley-oop their way to victory. Basketball in the Region has become a culture of brotherhood, comradery, and community. Friday night’s game where the Valparaiso Vikings took on the Portage Indians showcased Northwest Indiana’s powerful basketball culture.

The bleachers at Valparaiso High School were full of cheering fans as the Vikings walked onto the court with an 8-4 season to face the Indians with a 7-4 season. Both teams knew what they were up against, seeing the fight, passion, and skill in the other team and preparing for a great game.

The Crown Point Lady Bulldogs Celebrate Victory Over Portage Indians


The Crown Point Lady Bulldogs continued to roll along on Friday, taking a big 67-29 victory over the Portage Indians in DAC play. Their win makes them 9-0 on the season after just their second home game.

“I’m proud of the kids, proud of the way they fight and the way they bring it on the defensive end ever night even tonight when some shots weren’t falling early,” said Bulldogs Head Coach Chris Siebert. “It was a great crowd tonight, we had all our travel basketball kids here, a good student section and the band. It definitely feels good to be home.”
