Harbor Buick GMC of Portage opened its arms to the community and to vendors of the Region during their Fall Fest on Saturday. The event, which included raffling the right to buy a Mercedes-Benz for just $25, brought families together from all over Northwest Indiana.
“What we are doing is more for the community than for the dealership,” said Serafin Garcia, Finance Manager at Harbor Buick GMC. “Everything here is for the community. The greatest thing we’re doing is having a raffle. It’s free to get in. If you win the raffle, it’s $25 for a car.”
The raffle was open to all attendees over 18 years of age and was free to enter. The crowd waited anxiously for the winning ticket to be drawn. Kari Westlund of Michigan City cheered when her name was called.
“I just won the $25 car raffle,” said Westlund in front of her new car. “I’m so excited!”
Westlund and the staff of Harbor Buick GMC laughed together, saying that, for Westlund, the fifth time was the charm.
“We’ve gone to every car raffle in Michigan City,” said Westlund. “This was our fifth one!”
In addition to the raffle, Fall Fest also gave local businesses an opportunity to set up a tent, promote their businesses, and have fun with the community.
“We had about 30 vendors show up,” said Garcia. “We try to give our vendors support. It’s pretty much what the Fall Fest is all about.”
Gavin Pettit represented his troop, Boy Scout Troup 69 of Hobart, as he sold treats to attendees.
“I’m here to help raise money so the Boy Scouts can go to camp and can go on trips,” said Pettit. “[Harbor Buick GMC] does this for the community.”
Harbor Buick GMC hoped the event would offer residents a close look at the dealership as well as support the people of Northwest Indiana.
“We live here,” said Garcia. “Our customers buy from us, so it’s a hand-in-hand combination. They take care of us, so we take care of them. We’re in their community.”
Fall Fest further supported its local artists by hosting a local band for entertainment, Leap First of Michigan City.
“We have a good band out here performing for us, putting on some music,” said Garcia. “We try to support all of our local people.”
Alisha O’Banion of Valparaiso attended Fall Fest to support the band, but she found herself enjoying the vendors and the strong sense of community at Harbor Buick GMC.
“Harbor Buick put this event on to get everyone together,” commented O’Banion as she smiled among friends.
