Challenger League Raises Spirits of Portage Citizens Every Sunday

Challenger League Raises Spirits of Portage Citizens Every Sunday

Every Sunday night from 5 - 6 p.m., weather permitting, the players of The Challenger League play a game at the Portage Little League fields. The Challenger Division of Little League allow children from age 4 - 18 (22 if the person is still a high school student) with physical, mental and/or developmental challenges to enjoy playing baseball. Each player has a "buddy" to encourage them and assist as necessary" each player gets to bat and play in the infield or outfield; each player gets to score. Each player plays with enthusiasm and to the best of his or her ability. It is amazing to watch these youngsters and their buddies work together.

Tim McGuire announces the games and keeps up a constant flow of amusing chatter: "You hear about those other leagues where the players might be hitting .250 or even .300. In our league, everybody bats 1.000!" Family members, friends and other supporters cheer the players on with enthusiasm.

The Portage Exchange Club helps sponsor the Challenger League and provided a monetary gift so that the participants can all receive shirts. Special Olympics sponsors also provided funds for shirts.

At the June 12 game, members of the Portage Exchange Club handed out small American flags to the players and crowd to help celebrate Flag Day. This is part of the Exchange Club's initiative giveakidaflagtowave.

If you would like an event to raise your spirits and brighten your day, come to the Challenger games on June 19 and June 26 at 5 p.m.
