Former Slicers Star, Helped Lead LaPorte to 22-3 Record in 2013-14

gushrowski6’1” power forward Kelsey Gushrowski, formerly of LaPorte High School has agreed to continue her education and basketball at IU Northwest beginning in the Fall of 2015. The former Slicers star heavily recruited by IU Northwest Head Coach Ryan Shelton during the 2013-14 season decided to take a year off from the game following a season that saw LaPorte go 22-3 and advance to the Hobart 4A Sectional Title game. After a year away to pursue other interests, Gushrowski has decided that she is ready to continue her career at the college level.

Gushrowski is expected to make an immediate impact due on next season’s RedHawks squad due in large part to her size at 6’1” and athleticism. Gushrowski a four-year varsity player while at LaPorte converted an impressive 58% of her field goals attempts in a guard oriented offense during her senior season while averaging 6.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. One saeson prior, as a junior Gushrowski averaged 9.6 points and 7.8 rebound per game while 52% from the floor and 36% from three point range. She posted career bests with 20 points vs. Chesterton (Sectionals) 2/5/13 and 13 rebounds vs. Chesterton (Sectionals) 2/7/12. At the conclusion of her high senior season she was selected to play in the 2014 McDonald's Michiana All-Star Game.

“We are truly excited about the addition of Kelsey to our program and basketball family at IU Northwest. She is extremely talented and adds immediate size and athleticism to our front-court with the ability to finish both inside and shoot the three-point shot. She runs extremely well and is a great fit for an up-tempo style and attack that will blend well with the talented guards we will have next season. Her success at the 4A high school level will translate well to the college ranks where we expect her to make an immediate impact on next year’s team. I’m very glad that our persistent pursuit of her paid-off, she has great potential to be a great player at the college level.” said IUN Head Coach Ryan Shelton.

Gushrowski will join a young RedHawks squad that has just one senior that just finished the regular season at 18-12 and is headed to the 2015 A.I.I. Championship Tournament this weekend Feb. 27-28 in Espanola, New Mexico as the No. 2 seed. Gushrowski will be reunited with former AAU teammates in current RedHawks freshmen Grayce Roach and Morgan Flaharty. “Kelsey has either played with or against most of the core players on our current roster, that familiarity will immediately benefit her and our team,” added Shelton.

Gushrowski joins an already impressive IU Northwest recruiting class led by Northwest Indiana Times First-Team All-Area selections and Lowell Class 4A Sectional Champions in Gina Rubino and Tara Zlotkowski from Lake Central as well as forward Samantha Roach (Lowell). The RedHawks hope Gushrowski will continue in the program’s tradition of great post players following in the foot-steps of former All-Americans Sharon Houston and Megan Holland and standouts in Jenelle Kapelinski, Ashley Michalski, Ish Shah Terry and current RedHawk Danielle Zandstra. Kelsey will major in Elementary and Special Education at IU Northwest.
