Navarro, Garcia, named NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes

PUC-Peregrins The Purdue University Calumet men’s soccer team saw two players named 2014 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes, as seniors Sahid Navarro and Victor Garcia earned the honor for first time in their careers as announced by the national office Friday.

Navarro (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) and Garcia (Whiting, Ind./Clark) were both important starters on a Peregrine squad that reached the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament for the first time since its return in 2010 after a 15-year hiatus and finished its season as the first team to advance in the postseason since 1982.

Both players met the criteria for the award, which includes a minimum 3.5 grade point average and at least a junior standing academically.

The NAIA is the governing body for athletics programs at its nearly 300 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. The long-held mission of the NAIA is to promote the education and development of well-rounded students and productive citizens through intercollegiate athletics. The association offers equitable access and opportunities for participation in its 23 national championship events held annually throughout the country.
