OrangesWith the cold and flu season upon us, it's important to take action to fight and prevent illness. Here are some nutrients to help ward off or minimize cold or other viral infections:

  1. Vitamin C: 1,000 mg three times a day (total of 3,000 mg a day)
  2. L-Lysine: 1,000 mg three times a day (total 3,000 mg a day)
  3. Vitamin A: 25,000 International Units twice per day (total 50,000 I.U. per day)
  4. Zinc: lozenge of 13.3 mg every 2-3 hours while awake

It is important to taper the Vitamin C down gradually over several days when feeling better. This prevents a rebound C-deficiency state. L-Lysine, Vitamin A and Zinc can be stopped when feeling better, as long as symptoms do not recur.

The same regimen can be used for children using half the dosage amounts or 1/4 to 1/3 for infants. Also, you need to get extra rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid sugar and sweets, because sugar reduces the ability of the immune system to fight infections of all kinds.
