The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is offering a free program aimed at raising awareness and understanding about dealing with Alzheimer’s disease among minorities. The presentation, “Confronting Memory Loss and Legal and Financial Matters in the Black Community,” will provide African-Americans with critical information about assisting individuals who are living with dementia. The event will take place Saturday, June 2nd, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ivy Tech Gary, 1440 E. 35th Avenue, Gary, Indiana 46409. The program will feature two compelling speakers who will offer different perspectives on this important issue.

This year's Spring Caregiver Conference hosted by the Alzheimer's Association will be held Thursday, June 14, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (CST), at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center, 3550 East US Route 30, Merrillville, IN 46410. The conference is designed for professional caregivers and family members of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The featured speaker will present on how to deal with behaviors exhibited by confused individuals.
Dealing with these behaviors requires an understanding of motivation, a desire to learn who the person really is, the drive to find out what they want to do, and the willingness to help them get it done.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is “the third largest cause of death, ranking behind ‘diseases of the heart’ and all forms of cancer. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.”
