Art in the National Park at Get Outdoors Day Event

Get-OutdoorsOn Saturday, June 8th, locations around the country will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day with opportunities for families to enjoy active outdoor fun and explore their public lands. Activities like hiking and bird watching might be expected, but art?

"I can't think of a more fun way to spend a day," says environmental artist, Bonnie Zimmer. She'll be one of two artists offering activities at Dunes Learning Center's Get Outdoors Day open house at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. An accomplished artist and educator, Zimmer is known for her work with natural and found materials.

Camp for Military Kids Revived

Dunes-Learning-Center-LogoA summer camp for children of military families that was nearly canceled this year because it lost federal funding has been revived through a fundraising campaign of the camp operators.

For the third consecutive year, Indiana Operation: Military Kids summer camp will be held at Dunes Learning Center at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, after all.

Portage Community Historical Society to Host 2013 Reunions

Spring Out To Sunset Brought Out the Fun

The sky was full of many unique kites ranging in all different sizes and colors on May 18th at the Spring Out to Sunset Festival. From activities like plays by the Chicago Street Theater, musical performances by Chris and Lou, ATA Martial Arts demonstrations, Famous Flying Frisbee Dog competitions, petting zoos, nature hikes, wagon rides and self-guided story book trails; the 13th Annual Spring Out to Sunset festival at Sunset Hill Farms, was full of family fun.

Spring Out to Sunset was put on by Porter County Parks and Recreation Department and it is a festival in honor of Colonel Murray, the original owner of Sunset Hill Farms, who's favorite past time was flying kites. During the festival families are encouraged to bring kites and fly them over the many beautiful acres that Sunset hills Farms has to offer.

Free Event Offers Familes a Chance to Get Outdoors

National-Get-OutdoorsDunes Learning Center will offer families an exciting day of outdoor fun at no cost in celebration of National Get Outdoors Day on June 8. Trail hikes, river exploration, kayak demonstrations, camp crafts and lunch on the lawn will be supplemented by art exhibitions and live music at this annual event.

Located in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on the site of the former Good Fellow Youth Camp, Dunes Learning Center is not generally open to the public. Thanks to local partners, families will have a great opportunity to sample a wide range of outdoor activities among the park's wetlands, rivers, prairies and woodlands.
