Portage Police Reserve Officer Applications

Portage-Police-LogoApplications are being accepted for the positions of Portage Police Reserve Officers from Monday, February 13th, 2012 through Friday, February 24th 2012. Those interested in applying may pick up an application at the Portage Police Department, located at 2693 Irving St. Applications must be returned to the Police Department no later than 10:00 p.m. on Friday March 9th 2012. Applicants must meet the following requirements.

  • Must be a United State Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a high school diploma of GED.
  • Must have no felony or domestic battery convictions.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must attend and successfully complete within the first year, a certified Indiana 40 hour pre-basic course described by statue or be a certified State of Indiana police officer.
  • Must complete extensive field training program, which may require several hours above the standard 60-hour per quarter minimum within the first year.
  • Must reside within Porter County.
  • Must submit to an annual drug screen, as do all sworn members of the Portage Police Department.
  • Must submit to a background investigation.

Reserve Police Officers serve the City of Portage on a voluntary basis and receive no compensation for their time. Reserve Officers must complete 60 hours per quarter of the year to keep their status as an Officer with the Police Department. Some of the duties of a Reserve Officer include but are not limited to patrol duties, transportation of prisoners, fingerprinting, and traffic control. Certain events are considered mandatory involvement such as 4th of July parade, football and basketball game security as well as other duties, as assigned.
