Hammond, Ind. & Westville, Ind. – As a special tribute to John Friend, who has been affiliated with Purdue University Northwest Athletics for nearly 40 years, Purdue Northwest Athletics plans to host a special dinner and ceremony to honor the outstanding career of this legendary athletic administrator. The event is scheduled for Thursday, November 16, at the Fitness & Recreation Center on PNW’s Hammond campus. The evening opens with a social hour at 6 p.m., dinner scheduled for 7 p.m. and a special program to immediately follow.
“John has meant so much to Purdue Northwest Athletics and he is the cornerstone for the growth and success that this department has seen in recent years,” said Rick Costello, Purdue Northwest Director of Athletics. “The focus of this event is to honor the impact and legacy that he has embedded in Pride Athletics and to honor his amazing career in college athletics.”
Friend served as Director of Athletics for the former Purdue University Calumet for 20 years prior to his retirement in 2001 and then held interim AD titles in both 2007 and 2011. He played a pivotal role in the ground-breaking agreement between Purdue Northwest and the City of Hammond to develop a comprehensive outdoor athletic facility at Dowling Park, while continuing to assist key fundraising and planning efforts for the facility.
Friend has received numerous honors for his exemplary work in the field, having been inducted into the NAIA, Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Purdue Northwest, Lipscomb, and Munster Halls of Fame. He has also earned numerous university Administrator of the Year honors and served as the NAIA District 21 Chairman for a number of years.
