St. Catherine Hospital Celebrates 90 Years of Patient Care

St. Catherine Hospital will celebrate 90 years of advanced technology, patient satisfaction and quality care in Northwest Indiana with a health fair from 2 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19.

The acute care hospital, built through a partnership between the Manufacturers Association of East Chicago and the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, has been at the forefront of emergent medicine, quality care and technology since accepting its first patient in May of 1928.

The health fair, held in the Professional Office Building, features free health screenings. Included in the screenings are free cardiovascular assessments that help to determine risk for heart attack, diabetes or stroke. Other health screenings include bone density, blood pressure, grip strength, posture and balance. Chair yoga demonstrations will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Information tables will showcase the hospital’s history, its programs and services and medical firsts.

The robot is used by surgeons to perform the most complex and delicate procedures with less pain, quicker recovery times and fewer complications.

Enhanced robot-assisted surgical procedures now available at the hospital include soft tissue procedures and general surgery for prostate cancer, urologic applications, total or partial kidney removal, gallbladder removal, hernia repair, colon resection, colitis and gynecologic laparoscopic procedures.

St. Catherine Hospital has thrived over 90 years because of the staff’s ability to continue to use life-saving, innovative technologies and deliver significant medical “firsts” to patients in Northwest Indiana, according to Leo Correa, chief executive officer.

“For St. Catherine Hospital, the daVinci demonstration is a great example of our commitment to stay out in front when it comes to offering our patients new medical technologies and treatments now and in the decades to come,” Correa said.

“Our patients look to St. Catherine Hospital for a high-quality experience with caring doctors and staff, and the latest technology,” Correa added. “These projects offer assurance that our hospital campus mirrors the quality and level of care that is on par with the excellent medical care we provide within the walls of St. Catherine Hospital.”

St. Catherine Hospital has earned some of the highest levels of recognition in the country from treatment of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and patient safety. In 2016-17, St. Catherine Hospital was recognized as a five-star facility by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – a consumer rating for quality care and patient satisfaction that is held by less than 4 percent of all hospitals rated in the nation.

In the past two years, the hospital has been named among America’s Best for Heart Care and Patient Safety by the Women’s Choice Award; earned the Gold Plus | Target Stroke Elite Award from the American Heart | American Stroke Association and the Gold Seal/Advanced Certification for Inpatient Diabetes Care from the Joint Commission.
