Addison Pointe Stays on the Cutting Edge of Fun, Effective Physical Rehab

Getting yourself or a loved one back on their feet after a surgery seems like a daunting task at first. Rigorous physical training, often outdated methods, or simply taking the time out of a day can all make it difficult. Addison Pointe Health & Rehabilitation Center in Chesterton has made it a goal since they first got their start to stay on the cutting edge of rehab programs and make sure that their guests have a fun, quick, and successful experience that gets them back into their everyday routine.

Led by Shera Dolph, Rehab Director, Addison Pointe’s rehabilitation department hosts three categories of therapists: physical, occupational, and speech language pathologists. Be it recovering from a knee replacement, illness, or stroke, Addison Pointe is equipped with expert staff and the latest in equipment and technology to help patients recover and have fun while doing it.

“We have the biggest therapy gym in the area and multiple pieces of equipment that utilize virtual reality,” Dolph said. “It incorporates patients into a video game to work on multiple impairments and makes the therapy fun. They’re not just sitting there counting off exercises.”

They even have an AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, which uses NASA technology to simulate lower weights and pressures. Part of their success in staying at the forefront of rehab is through a partnership with Jintronix, a company leading the charge in fun and effective therapy programs. Addison Pointe’s partnership lets their patients try out new developments before anyone else.

However, all the technology in the world would be useless without compassionate staff members guiding the rehab process and working closely with patients. Addison Pointe’s rehab department hosts nationally certified professionals and experts with over 20 years of experience in the field. Every patient consistently works with the same therapist, building a strong relationship focused on the patient’s individual goals, not the department’s schedule.

“The patient is always going to be familiar with who is treating them,” Dolph said. “We want to provide patients with proper care, but we also want them to have fun. We learn about them and adapt our therapy session to what they like to do. For example, we’ve got a crafting corner for ladies who like to craft, a gardening center where they can raise plants themselves, and nuts and bolts for the guys. Rapport is very good, we’re constantly joking and laughing here.”

Keeping patients happy is key to their recovery, for more than the simple sake of fun.

“It’s huge, if they’re not enjoying where they’re at then they aren’t going to want to participate,” Dolph explained. “If you can get them involved and having fun, then they’ll recover faster and get out of here faster.”
