Rittenhouse of Portage Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day With Corn Beef and Cabbage Dinner

To the sound of gentle live harp music, people from Bonner Senior Center, and Maria Reiner Senior Center gathered at Rittenhouse Village Portage to enjoy a meal of corned beef and cabbage for a great cause.

Seniors from both centers could purchase tickets for themselves and their families.  All of the proceeds will go back into the Bonner Center and Maria Reiner Center. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful afternoon, all while raising money.

The Rittenhouse staff worked hard to prepare the space and food for the visiting residents. Everything was green, from the table clothes to the decorations, the cups, and even the clothes of many of the residents. They had light up sunglasses, hats, wigs, and more to brighten their day with a little green.

“I’m having a wonderful time! I sing with the Bonner Center Choraliers, and sometimes we perform here. I love getting together with everyone and seeing my friends,” said Jil Dixon, a resident of the Bonner Center.

The event's meal was not limited to corned beef and cabbage. A wide variety of desserts were available as well, like cookies and cakes. A photo booth had residents dressing up in their best green St. Patrick’s Day attire. All while the harp playing strummed traditional Celtic tunes.

Judy Kukelka, Rittenhouse marketing director, spent time at the photo booth, where she encouraged residents to try on the fun photo booth props and took photos on their cell phones.

“We really enjoy bringing everyone together, and to have the chance to show our food and community off, and raise some money,” said Kukelka.

“They do a lot for us and we do a lot for them. It’s a nice way to get everyone together," added Kim Scott, Director of Recreation at Portage Rittenhouse.

Residents and staff sat together at long tables, decorated with green table covers and candy dishes. They enjoyed each other's company as they praised the food and atmosphere of the event. Many of the groups were eager to pose together for photos.

Annabelle Wilson, a resident said, “I’m having a great time, I’m here with some friends. I love everything about St. Patrick’s Day! They have great food and entertainment here.”

Rittenhouse even delivered meals to people who can’t make the event! The Bonner Center, Maria Reiner Center, and the city of Hobart all received to-go meals today.

“We love to give back to the community. The two senior centers here today, Maria Reiner and the Bonner Center, they do such a great job. Everybody loves corned beef and cabbage, so it’s a great time to host a fundraiser. Each year we’re able to donate a little more to them. It’s a feel-good event for us and for them.” said Marsha Leonard, executive director of Portage Rittenhouse.

Rittenhouse will also host an event at Portage IMAX on April 11th. Anyone over 55 is invited to come. There will be a breakfast at 9:30AM and a film will screen directly after.
