IU Seeking Public Input for Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan for Northwest Campus

rot1Indiana University Emergency Management and Continuity and The Polis Center will host a public information session regarding a multi-hazard mitigation plan for the IU Northwest campus from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at the John W. Anderson Library Conference Center, room 110.

IU Emergency Management and Continuity and The Polis Center are interested in receiving public input on the plan, which is designed to reduce or eliminate various impacts from disasters such as flooding or earthquakes on university infrastructure, teaching, research and public service.

IU Emergency Management and Continuity staff has teamed with The Polis Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis to develop a Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan for IU Bloomington and other IU campuses as part of FEMA’s Disaster-Resistant University initiative. Once the plans are completed, they will be submitted to FEMA for approval.

To develop IU's plan, Polis will use GIS modeling tools, including FEMA’s Hazus-MH, to predict and analyze the estimated losses each campus could face in the event of a disaster. These risk assessments will guide the team in compiling specific mitigation strategies for each IU campus to inform IU Emergency Management and Continuity decision-making in project planning and to help reduce the impacts of natural and man-made disasters.

Anyone who has questions or would like to provide input should contact Ken Long, IU Emergency Management and Continuity, at 812-855-8941 or kelong@indiana.edu.
