Porter Health Care System to Promote Heart Healthy Diets During 2015 American Heart Month

Healthy-Heart-Diet-ClassTo increase awareness of healthy lifestyles and promote healthy diets during American Heart Month, Porter Health Care System will present a free Healthy Heart Diet class from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Feb. 17. This class provides instruction on how to read food labels and choose heart-healthy food, along with teaching basic heart healthy food preparation tips.

According to Vanessa Provins, clinical dietitian at Porter Regional Hospital, Porter’s Healthy Heart Diet class follows the American Heart Association guidelines regarding healthy amounts of sodium and cholesterol in food, utilizing the guidelines to discuss how to eat well at home and while dining out in a restaurant.

“The Healthy Heart Diet class provides a model for how we all should be eating,” Provins said. “This class offers great tools for those who want to change their lifestyle and make healthier choices. If you follow the heart healthy guidelines, you will achieve weight loss.”

Those with other health ailments will find the class beneficial to their dietary needs as well. “The class not only covers guidelines for heart patients and those seeking weight loss, but also compliments those on a diabetic diet, which encompasses decreased saturated fats, cholesterol and trans fats and a moderate intake of sodium,” she said.
