Is your body in the right shape to fight off viruses and fend off germs that can make you sick? It not, there are certain things you can do that will help you stay healthy year-round. Family Medicine physician Shane Bush, M.D. of Portage Medical Group offers simple habits you can use to give your immune system a boost.

Get Moving

Aerobic exercises like jogging, swimming, aDrink-Waternd brisk walking are the most beneficial type of exercise for your immune system, regardless of your age. People who perform regular aerobic exercise enjoy a reduced risk of diabetes, cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity also reduces stress, anger, and depression by allowing your body to release healthy chemicals called endorphins that aid relaxation.

Hydrate

Water helps cleanse the body and remove toxins, including germs. By keeping your body’s systems, especially your respiratory system, well hydrated, you can enhance your virus-fighting potential. “Ideally, you should be consuming eight cups (64 ounces) of water daily,” said Dr. Bush.

Rest Up

Most experts advise getting six to eight hours of sleep per night. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants before going to bed.
