It's larger, it's well equipped, it's more efficient, and it continues to deliver a level of advanced outpatient surgery care.

The outpatient surgery center adjacent to the Portage Hospital has a new name and a sophisticated, contemporary new look. Now known as Shoreline Surgery Center, the facility recently completed a $2.5 million remodel and expansion. To help improve the experience of patients and their families, Shoreline Surgery Center offers an increased number of surgeries as well as more advanced types of surgeries.

Larger Surgery Suites
"The project started in spring 2010 and we finished with the final touches just this past March," explained Denise Wible, RN, the director of Shoreline Surgery Center. She went on to say that the first phase included adding two surgery suites, bringing the total number to four. The two new surgery suites are larger and are capable of handling complex orthopedic cases, because they can accommodate the big equipment necessary for these surgeries.

Additional Capabilities
In addition to the orthopedic surgeries, Porter physicians also perform general gynecologic, ophthalmic and podiatric surgeries at the Center. Anticipating the increase in surgeries, additional square footage was added for the building of four new post-operative areas. These areas are equipped with new easy-to-read patient monitors featuring mobile stands to allow more flexibility in patient care areas.

Convenience & Confidentiality
The complete overhaul of the facility also included creating a separate entrance into the facility. "Previously, our patients used the same door and waiting area as the hospital's emergency department," Wible said. In conjunction with the new entrance, a new family waiting area, reception area and family conference area were created. "The new family conference area allows physicians to talk with the patient's family in a private, confidential space which was something we realized was needed.

Patient Focused
Wible believes patients will embrace the transformation of the Center. "From top to bottom we have upgraded and modernized the facility," she said. "From floor and wall coverings, furniture, draperies and more, it's an entirely updated and enhanced look." Yet it's more than just the appearance of the facility Wible stressed. "Our staff has always been and will continue to be 100 percent patient-focused. Our doctors, nurses and staff truly care about the whole patient by consistently delivering advanced technical care and exhibiting honest compassion and concern on a daily basis."
