Aspiring Medical Students Get Lessons from the Pros

Aspiring-Medical-Students-Get-Lessons-from-the-ProsFranciscan St. Anthony Health-Michigan City welcomed 19 Barker Middle School students, who aspire to medical careers, as part of the local school’s Career Week 8th Grade Job Shadow Day May 14. Elaine Criswell, hospital manager of education, is shown explaining the function of a breathing tube that was inserted into “Grandma Chase,” a patient simulator mannequin, during Criswell’s portion of the program.

She also discussed the role of nurses and provided tours of simulated patient care areas and use of other equipment. Presentations also involved the philosophy of living the health care ministry, a tour of the ambulance bay and equipment and patient care demonstrations inside two LaPorte County EMS ambulances; hand-washing and basic infection control principles; various patient care treatments, such as respiratory therapy, portable x-ray, lab testing and electrocardiogram; and health care careers.
