High School Advanced Health Class Gets Lesson from the Pros

Woodland-Care-CHSA group of Chesterton High School juniors and seniors were hosted by staff at the Woodland Cancer Care Center of Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City recently, where they were provided information on the disease – its causes and treatments – and given a tour of the facility.

Radiation therapist Jessica Scheeringa is shown demonstrating the Trilogy Linear Accelerator, a state-of-the-art cancer treatment device, to some of the students. The dozen class members on hand were split into groups for lessons and tours.

Bernie Stento, advanced health class instructor, contacted Rosemary Meux, center director of oncology, to arrange the visit. “I wanted the students to learn about cancer and see the technology that is used in treatment,” Stento said, adding he was hoping to arrange another visit in coming months.

Among other Woodland speakers was Kammi Fox-Kay, oncology liaison-navigator, who presented a program on cancer and its warning signs.

Besides the Linear Accelerator, Woodland Cancer Care Center, 8955 W. 400 N., offers PET/CT Scan and Diagnostic CT, along with 14 infusion bays, lab and pharmacy. There also is a patient and family education center and a community room.
