aha logoThe American Heart Association will host the 2012 Lake County Heart Walk this Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point from 9-11 a.m.

The Lake County Heart Walk event features one-, two- and three-mile routes and a free family-friendly health festival that includes food, games, giveaways, entertainment and much more.

Saturday’s event is the first of two walks in Northwest Indiana. The Porter County Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 9-11 a.m. at the Coffee Creek Center in Chesterton.

Over 1,000 Northwest Indiana residents are expected to take part in the two Heart Walks and raise over a half a million dollars for the American Heart Association’s research, educational and awareness programs in the region and across the country.

The Heart Walks feature teams of heart disease and stroke survivors, employees from local companies and people dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers.

For the second consecutive year Mike Finissi, senior vice president and chief operating officer of NIPSCO, will serve as chair of the Northwest Indiana Heart Walks. Last year Finissi was the nation’s No. 2 top fundraising walker, raising over $130,000 for the Heart Walk in 2011 and leading NIPSCO to raise over $200,000.

The Heart Walks are nationally sponsored by SUBWAY Restaurants and Jenny Craig. Local sponsors of the Northwest Indiana Heart Walks are ArcelorMittal, NIPSCO and Methodist Hospitals.
