A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Dennis Meyers

This week’s Life in the Spotlight is very someone who has devoted 34 years to the Portage community.

Detective Dennis Meyers has been with the Portage Police department since day one of being an officer and works hard every day to keep the people of Portage safe. Meyers is a graduate of Portage High School and a Valparaiso University Alumni that completed his officer training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, and also has his polygraph examiner certification from the Department of Defense Polygraph Institute.

Detective Meyers is a two-time Police Officer of the year award recipient for the Portage Police Department and is in his 20th year in the detective bureau.

"I appreciate the sense of accomplishment that I have when I'm able to help other officers and members of our community," says Meyers.

Meyers and his wife of two years have a combination of four children ranging in ages 13 to 29. He and his wife enjoy being with family, traveling, and working on their house together.

In addition to his service to Portage as a police officer, Meyers has volunteered his time in the past as a little league coach and has worked security at Porter Regional Hospital for over 20 years.

What keeps detective Meyers going is, “The ability to help people during difficult times. Being able to resolve cases, help people, and feeling I’ve done the most I can for them”.

He goes to say that what he enjoys most about his line of work is, “Being able to do what we can for the community and people in general, while still having a sense of accomplishment even 34 years later.”

Detective Meyers' dedication to protect and serve those who live in the community of Portage make him an ideal Portage Life in the Spotlight and valued member of our community.
