A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Jesus Cervera

jesus-cerveraAfter graduating high school, Jesus Cervera didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. He didn’t know the direction his future would take him. He wanted to see the world and obtain perspective on what he would do for a career so he decided to join the United States Marine Corps. Cervera served a total of eight years in the Marines with his last four years being in the reserve. At the same time he attended college at Purdue Calumet and worked in the banking industry.

Cervera has been in banking for 17 years. He is currently employed at 1st Source Bank in Portage. He feels as though his time spent in the Marines has impacted his business career. Being in the military taught him strong values and integrity. He uses these values when helping clients in the banking industry.

“It’s all about integrity. It’s about being loyal to his clients, and making sure all of their needs are met,” Cervera stated.

When it comes to community involvement, Cervera does whatever he can to give back. He talks about, “enhancing the economic development” and having a “lifelong aspect of service” that he attributes to being in the military. He is a determined individual who has a strong sense of commitment to the American life, and helping his clients and his community.

Cervera is on the board of directors for HealthLinc, a wonderful organization, whose mission is to enrich lives by providing access to patient-centered, quality health care. This organization helps people with general health issues, as well as people who are uninsured or under-insured. Cervera’s commitment to giving back just keeps getting stronger with all that he does.

He is also on the board of the Portage Adult Education Center. He is an admirable advocate for individuals and he was nominated to be involved in the South Shore Leadership Center. This is a yearlong course, where leaders of different industries come together.

Cervera graduated from this class and his passion for banking continued to grow. He also speaks about the ROTC program at Portage High School.

“This program really helps young men and women at an early age, put some perspective in their life. Whether it be going to college or working a trade, it can really help people better themselves,” he said.

Jesus Cervera is a prime example of someone who truly cares about giving back to his community. Whether he can be a role model to a student, helping someone at HealthLinc, or working in the banking industry, he truly cares about people and the impact he has on them.

Cervera said, “It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in or role you play in society, there is a lifelong ethic of service. If you’re aspiring to be a leader, or looking to enhance your career path, it is important to have a sense of social responsibility.”
