Chris Mahlmann, founder of Ideas in Motion Media, fondly remembers Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds crooning in the background as he began courting his now wife, Natalie, 28 years ago. On Saturday, both longtime love birds enjoyed a nostalgic and fun-filled evening of seeing Babyface live at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond.
“It was a special experience, being at the concert with my wife, who I fell in love with listening to that music,” Mahlmann said. “Thanks to Horseshoe and their great staff of people and ability to pull in these amazing acts, we had an incredibly memorable evening we will never forget.”
Horseshoe Casino’s “The Venue,” played the perfect host for a high-energy show featuring opening act Jeffrey Osbourne and Babyface on Saturday night.
Babyface has written and produced 26 No. 1 hits and won 11 Grammy Awards during his music career. The Hoosier-native was born in Indianapolis and in the 1980’s joined “The Deele,” a R&B band that recorded several hits, before he broke away as a songwriter and producer. He has written hit songs for artists and bands such as Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, TLC, NSYNC, Usher, Beyonce, Destiny’s Child, Justin Bieber, Boys II Men, Bobby Brown, Paula Abdul and more.
Osbourne, now 69 years of age, performed with high energy, not missing a beat from his early years of funk and blues power hits. He ran and danced through the aisles, getting the audience on their feet and dancing and singing along.
When Babyface took the stage, applause erupted and he dazzled the crowd with his classics. Mahlmann commented that his performance was spry and his appearance was youthful, despite being a long-time music legend. Like Osbourne, he interacted in the audience and kept them swept up in the music.
While highly organized, the concert played out like a big party, with everyone celebrating the music they cherished and knew so well.
“The Venue is an excellent spot for concerts and performances,” Mahlmann said. “It’s a more of an intimate space, where no matter where you are sitting, you have a perfect view of the stage.”
Mahlmann noted that as he and his wife entered the venue, there was a large assembly of staff accommodating guests, making sure they easily found their seat and had refreshments, and of course had access to the delicious Goody’s Famous Popcorn. Even Horseshoe’s Production Manager for The Venue, Jeff Clayton, came to personally greet the Mahlmann’s and make sure they were set up for an evening of fun.
“Horseshoe does an excellent job of bringing huge, nationally-acclaimed acts to Northwest Indiana, and is accommodating at every turn, from easy-to-find free parking to reasonably priced tickets,” Mahlmann said. “It’s an amazing venue for people from Chicago and Northwest Indiana alike.”
