Cowboys, Monsters and Sorcerers: The Can’t Miss Movies of the Fall of 2016

Cowboys, Monsters and Sorcerers: The Can’t Miss Movies of the Fall of 2016

Summer is winding down, and soon the leaves will begin to change. As Fall begins, we say goodbye to the season of blockbuster after blockbuster, but that doesn’t mean there will be a lack of great cinema. These are the movies I’m the most excited to see at the end of 2016.

There are few genres as close to my heart as the Western, and this year a classic is reborn – for the 3rd time. In The Magnificent Seven, the small town of Rose Creek is plagued by industrialist Bartholomew Bogue. Out of ideas, the people of Rose Creek turn to a group of outlaws, bounty hunters and gamblers to protect them. Among these outlaws is Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke. The Magnificent Seven opens on September 23rd.

Coming of age stories usually aren’t my cup of tea, but A Monster Calls seems like an incredible adventure. It’s the story of Connor, a boy who finds himself out of place time after time. While dealing with an onslaught of bullies at school and his mother’s failing health, his only source of understanding manifests itself in the form a giant monster. Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones and Sigourney Weaver line the fantastic cast. A Monster Calls opens on October 21st.

Like many movie-goers of the past eight years or so, I find myself waiting eagerly for the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this year one of my all-time favorite characters comes to the big screen. Doctor Strange is Marvel’s greatest magic user, the Sorcerer Supreme. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Stephen Strange, a world-class surgeon who suffers a fateful accident that denies him the use of his hands. Humbled, he must set aside his arrogance to understand his true destiny as a master of magic and alternate dimensions. Doctor Strange opens on November 4th.

Rogue-One-A-Star-Wars-StoryRogue One: A Star Wars Story
There’s no movie franchise as big as Star Wars, and later this year we will get to experience a chapter of the story that has since been left untold. Star Wars: Rogue One is about Jyn Erso, a Rebellion soldier and criminal. Jyn, played by Felicity Jones, is given the enormous task of stealing the plans for the Death Star. With the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, Jyn needs to find a way to get these plans! Star Wars: Rogue One opens on December 16th.
