Candace’s Region Rotary Round Up: Summer Events

Candace’s Rotary Round-Up

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. Over the years, Rotarians have taken on global causes ranging from literacy and peace to water and health.

Many local initiatives are happening right around us! Scholarships for high school students, cleaning up of local parks and gifts of time, talent and treasure to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations are all the foundation of the Club’s motto, “Service Above Self.”

I joined the efforts of the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club as a way to give back to the community I grew up in. Today, I bring you the Region’s Rotary Round-Up as a way to shine a light on all the great things happening at Clubs in and around NW Indiana!

Here’s your Rotary Recap:

Summer is in full swing and Rotary Clubs around the region are working hard to ensure there are events full of fun and fellowship for the community. From Highland to La Porte, each event offers a unique opportunity to not only spread the mission of Rotary, but also to garner support for a variety of local initiatives.

Starting off right, the Rotary Club of La Porte hosted their annual Rotary Hub of Awesome Water Ski Show on July 22nd. The show took place on Pine Lake and featured the Lake City Skiers, the only competition water ski team in Indiana. The event offered a change of pace for the community and provided an opportunity to celebrate its attributes.

“We are in a unique position in La Porte since we have amazing natural beauty with seven lakes in our city limits,” said Fran Milo, President of the Rotary Club of La Porte. “This is a way for us to highlight that and for people to enjoy the beauty of being outdoors with family. It doesn’t cost them anything to see something different.” Click here to read the full story.

Rounding out July, the Rotary Club of Hammond hosted their Bowl with the Pros event at Olympia Lanes in Hammond. All tickets included food, drinks and the opportunity to bowl with a Pro-Am bowler. Proceeds benefitted local Northwest Indiana organizations such as:  Haven House, YMCA, School City of Hammond, the Boy Scouts, and more!

If you happened to miss these events, don’t worry! There are more to come…

On August 3rd, the Rotary Club of Highland invites the community to their annual Corn Roast taking place at Main Square Park, 3001 Ridge Road from 4-7pm.  Come out and support Highland Rotary while enjoying some of the best sweet corn in Northwest Indiana! Polish sausage, hot dogs, potato chips, water, soda pop, watermelon, and delicious brownies from Cakes by Karen will also be available.

Proceeds benefit Dollars for Scholars College Scholarships, the Highland Police, Fire, Parks & Recreation Departments and other local and international causes. Advance tickets are available at the Lincoln Community Center, Highland/Griffith Chamber Office or Cakes by Karen. Click here for more info.

Next up, is the Babapaloosa Music Festival hosted by the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club at Sunset Hill Farm in Valparaiso on Sunday, August 5th from 12-8pm. This event is fun for the whole family with plenty of food, drinks and activities, plus children 12 & under get in free! This year’s line-up will feature 5 bands including: 444 with Dan Vogedes at 12:30, local rising country star Jerica Paliga at 1:45, Pet Envy at 3:00, Nic Byrd of Los Pecados de Maria at 4:45, and rounding out the night for the 4th year in a row is the Corey Dennison Band taking the stage at 6pm. Get your tickets today at baba2018.eventbrite.com.

Last but certainly not least, the Rotary Club of Valparaiso hosts the Harry Potter Book Fair on Saturday August 25th from 10am-6pm at Barnes & Noble 150 Silhavy Rd. Suite 120 Valparaiso. There will be Harry Potter Activities, Games, Trivia, Character Contest and General Wizarding Fun! All are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite character or in a Hogwarts uniform! A percentage of the Barnes & Noble purchases made this day will benefit the Valparaiso Rotary Club and their local projects. More information can be found here!

Most all Rotary events are volunteer led with members selflessly giving of their time, talent and treasure to bring them to fruition. The support of the community makes all the difference in ensuring these events are a success so be sure to support a Club near you!
