Portage Chamber of Commerce Hosts 35th Annual Spring Swing Golf Outing to Celebrate Summer

A battalion of golf carts roamed the greens at Robbinhurst on Friday as the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce hosted their 35th annual Spring Swing Golf Outing. With summer officially starting next week, chamber members and public participants enjoyed a day of golf, food, and raffles.

With three flights and more than 100 golfers packing into Robbinhurst’s 18 hole course, the day started off strong. The Spring Swing is a special event for the Chamber for one big reason – networking. It sounds like a buzzword, but building relationships is key to any business and the golf outing provided a way for people to connect.

“This outing allows businesses to connect with others in their business as they usually have a foursome team,” said Nancy Simpson, Executive Director of the Portage Chamber of Commerce. “This event has evolved slowly, and we think that having it at a local venue here in the Portage community has helped increase attendance.”

Spring Swing also is unique for the chamber because it is open to the public. Meeting and socializing with local businesses on the greens is a casual and personal way of building community that cannot be replicated in an exchange at a cash register. The Portage Chamber is one of the more visible organizations of its kind around the Region, and that attracts members like Regional Federal Credit Union, who pride themselves on giving back to their community.

“This event is a good thing for Portage, our members, and the businesses of our community,” said Irma Torres, Vice President of Branch Development at Regional FCU and President of the Board for the Portage Chamber. “It’s a time for everyone to get together and see what the chamber is all about.”

This year’s Spring Swing saw the return of the 50/50 Putt contest. Participants purchase a golf ball, set up around the putting green, and at the sound of a horn, they all try to make their putt at the same time. The winner received half of the pot and all of the glory. Attendees also tried their luck at various raffles, featuring prizes like a massive fireworks package perfect for Independence Day.

“Golfing is fun and this is all noncompetitive,” said Jessica Bailey, Director of Marketing and Community Development at the Portage Chamber. “This is about getting out, enjoying a beautiful day, and creating contacts.”
