The 31st Annual Portage Chamber Golf Outing Was an Undubbed Ace in the Hole

The Portage Chamber of Commerce hosted their 31st annual Spring Swing on a lovely Monday morning at the Brassie Golf Club in Chesterton, IN. Around 80 golfers showed up -pros and hackers alike- to take part in the four-person scramble.

For those who get looks of confusion on your faces when you try to associate the words "golf" and :scramble", a scramble is a type of golf tournament that is commonly used for club tournaments, charity outings, etc. There are multiple variations of the game, but the general process goes:each player tees off on each hole. The best of those shots is selected and all of the players play their second shots from that spot. Then the best of the second shots is determined and all of the players take their third shots from that spot, this goes on until the someone gets their ball into the hole.

Office Manager of the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce Nancy Simpson said, "We are luck to have such a beautiful day and the money raised from this outing helps us at the Portage Chamber. We have all sorts of events throughout the year on top of the golf outing like Portage Community Business Night, an annual banquet, Music in the Park, as well as others...It's a fun and laid-back time."

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, sponsored by Town & Country Market and NLMK, were provided for the outing; A hole in one contest was sponsored by Arnell Auto Group; a "Wheel of Fun" was brought out and people paid $5 and to spin the wheel )Prizes were valued at $10 or more); betting was allowed on par 3 holes where people could double their money, and raffles were in play. There's no way anyone left without some sort of neat prize or bragging rights.

Prizes were also given out for the longest drive on the fairway and closest to the pin.

So the foursomes zoomed around the course on their golf carts. They spouted playful banter at one another and yelled sternly at the ball when they whiffed it. Laughter and the thwack of golf balls could be heard from all directions.

"We're part of the fabric of the community and we felt the need to give back. We're doing pretty well here today," Jim Magera, Business Banker for 1st Source Bank and representative for the 1st Source Bank foursome said. "We've been in this market since the 1980s and we feel that the efforts that we put forth in all of the communities are a reflection of the people that work in those communities."
