This week Industrial Revolution salutes George Washington (1732-1799)
“I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.”
George Washington was a dominant military and political leader who became the first President of the United States, serving from 1789-1797. He led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Dissatisfied with the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, he presided over the writing of the US Constitution in 1787. Washington had a vision of a great and powerful nation that would preserve liberty, improve infrastructure, promote commerce, reduce regional tensions, and promote the spirit of American nationalism. A popular childhood story is that of his upset father questioning him about who cut down his favorite Cherry tree. Young George replied “I cannot tell a lie, Pa… I did it”.
