Hobart Parks Department’s Arts In the Park Program Offers Creative Summertime Entertainment for Local Children

Tables cluttered with Play-Doh, markers, glue and paint, surrounded by smiling faces and messy hands kicked off the first day of the Hobart Parks Department’s annual Arts In the Park activities at Festival Park Community Center.

The annual program gives local children and their parents the opportunity to stop by one of several parks locations throughout Hobart for a safe, fun environment where the children can express their youthful creativity.

“We plan a wide variety of activities with a wide range of materials for the children to work with throughout the week,” said Katie Antal, facilitator for Arts in the Park. “One day we might be doing hand painting, the other day it could be water colors, the next day it might be some sort of cut-and-paste or maybe working with balloons. We do a wide range of different craft projects with the children. Mondays we are usually inside, but we are outside most other days of the week.”

Jessica Michelin, Hobart resident, heard about the program from her neighbor and brought her son to the first day of Arts In the Park.

“I think it’s a great idea! It’s creative fun for the kids and gives them something to do instead of staying inside, being bored or just playing video games. They have a lunch truck that stops by, so the children can get something to eat, and they can even swim for free on Fridays, so we’re really looking forward to that,” said Michelin.

Piper, 10, is a Hobart resident and enjoyed the chance to express her creativity inside the Community Center.

“I really liked the pipe cleaners and pom poms,” said Piper, holding up her creation. “I made a monster!”

The program is free and parents are asked to stay with their children during the activities, which run from 11am to 2pm, Monday through Friday at the following locations:

Mondays - Festival Park Community Center
Tuesdays - Robinson Lake
Wednesdays- City Ball Park
Thursdays- Arbor Lane Park
Fridays- Hobart Community Pool
