Lubeznik Center for the Arts announces the 2013 Fall Class schedule which has something for every age group. There are offerings for kids ages 8 to 18 – from dance, cartooning, drawing and multi-media art. Adults can get involved in drawing or watercolor painting with Neil Kienitz starting September 23. Other adult classes include Kumihimo (silk braiding), mixed media painting, woven sculpture, bookbinding, fused glass, hat making, photography and writing. Adult Drawing

This class is primarily for those with little or no drawing experience, although those with more experience will also benefit from this “right brain” approach. Instruction will focus on pencil drawing in a realistic style from a reference.

Watch the magic happen as a brush, loaded with translucent color, sweeps across the paper. This class will give beginning students an overview of the materials and introduce them to basic techniques, such as layering colors.

Cartooning & Manga

Kumihimo
Ages 16- Adult

Students will learn the ancient technique of Kumihimo, a Japanese braiding of silk often combined with beads to create jewelry. Tools for first class: round nose pliers, chain nose or bent nose pliers and a flush cutter.

Mixed Media Painting

Students will create a one-of-a-kind sculptural painting using plaster to adhere found objects to canvas. By layering fabrics, papers, paints, buttons, and text, students will produce a personal work of art. Supples: 16x20 canvas. All others provided.

Woven Sculptures

Students will learn the ins and outs of creating beautiful woven sculptures, using natural weaving materials, found twigs, sticks or driftwood. Materials will be provided, but a favorite twig is always welcome.

Bookbinding Workshop

Each student will make their own 6” x 9” hard bound book or journal. Students will learn how to fold, stitch and glue paper signatures into a book block. Next, using re-purposed materials from old leather purses and luxurious wallpaper samples, each student will create a one of a kind book cover. No previous experience is necessary. Bring a bag lunch.

Hat Making: Cocktail Hats & Tea

Learn how to create a one of a kind cocktail hat for the holidays. From feathers to fabrics, Amanda will demonstrate techniques to get students started in hat making. Wired buckram cocktail hat bases will be provided and students will learn how to cover, line, and trim their very own hat. All students will leave with a completed piece. While working students will enjoy treats & tea from Bowler Man Confections.

Photographing Artwork

The importance of having good quality digital images of one’s artwork for proposals, portfolios or making prints cannot be over emphasized. This workshop will cover all the major challenges associated with making a good image of 2-D artwork. Equipment, lighting, exposure, sharpness, color balance, editing and general methods of handling common problems will be discussed. Typical setups and editing techniques will be demonstrated.

Sandcastle Writers Workshop

This is a writing workshop for beginning and experienced writers of fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry. Using the Amherst Writers and Artists method, this workshop focuses on in-class writing, sharing if the writer chooses, and positive feedback in a supportive environment. Instructor’s writing prompts are optional and designed to help writers with craft and creativity. Instructor is an AWA certified affiliate. Please bring paper and pen.

The emphasis in this class is on the joy of dance and artistic expression. Children will learn dance elements with which they can experiment and learn dance techniques to develop strength, flexibility and balance. This class will feature art projects in a variety of mediums and techniques. Many of the lessons will relate to the exhibitions Lubeznik Center has on display in its galleries. The children will learn art appreciation and skills while they create their own masterpieces.

Drawing for Teens

Drawing for Young People

This course is for young people who love to draw. Students will learn ways of understanding shape, line and shading that will help them to draw what we see! Participants will experiment with different art materials and draw some of their favorite objects. See an improvement in skill set in 6 weeks. All supplies included. The architecturally iconic Lubeznik Center for the Arts stands just steps away from Michigan City's lakefront. In addition to a full exhibition schedule in six galleries, LCA is home to an outdoor art collection; a Gallery Shop featuring hand crafted, artisan items; plus classes, performances and after-hours events. Open Weekdays 10 am to 5 pm, and Weekends 11 am to 4 pm (Central Daylight Time).
