Chalk the Walk This Saturday!

FYSB Chalk-the-Walk March2013Chalk the Walk, a community family-friendly event, will be held on Saturday, June 22 at the Porter County Courthouse square in downtown Valparaiso. The event is hosted by the Family & Youth Services Bureau.

Beginning at 8 am and going until 1 pm, over 100 artists of all ages and skill levels will be creating artwork on the sidewalk with brightly colored pastel chalk. Each artist will be working on a designated 3 foot by 3 foot space on the sidewalks surrounding the Courthouse.

“We are excited that so many people have joined as sponsors for this event. The Family & Youth Services Bureau always looks to create a family friendly spirit in our work, and this event will emulate that spirit.” stated Lisa Jordan, FYSB President & CEO.

Community members are welcome to come to the Courthouse square during the event and observe the work in progress. “It will take each artist between two to five hours to complete their drawing, depending on the detail and difficulty,” notes Jackie Gray, Director of Development and Community Relations. “Because of the intensity of the colors and the layers and blending of the chalk, the designs will be able to be viewed for days; some of the artwork will even be able to be seen after a rain.”

If weather conditions prevent the event from beginning at 8 am, it will be delayed until later in the day on Saturday when rain has passed; if it is raining all day Saturday, the event will be held on Sunday, June 23 beginning at noon.

Other activities that day include a designated area set aside for children 10 and under who do not have a sponsored square to do some drawing with regular sidewalk chalk. There will also be low-key music playing by Tyler Nimon, Waz Lisek, Mami Matsuda, and Into the Light.

Sponsors and Artists can still register for the event by contacting Jackie Gray at 219-464-9585 or jgray@fysb.org.
