Lubeznik Center for the Arts Presents First Fridays @ 5: Two Playwrights and a Stage

2-Playwrights-and-StageLubeznik Center for the Arts presents Two Playwrights and a Stage for the Friday, February 1, 2013 event of the Uptown Arts District’s First Fridays @ 5 series. Four one-act plays by three-time CATCO participant, Jerry Holt, and 2009 LaPorte County Poet Laureate, Susan Block will be the evening’s featured entertainment.

Jerry Holt holds a PhD in English from the University of Oklahoma and is the Interim Chair of English and Modern Languages at Purdue North Central. Holt’s plays will begin at 6 pm. Holt summarized his featured comedy, Train Stop, as, “Very, very early one morning at the Michigan City 11th street train stop, a broken, defeated man receives a remarkable vision in the form of a visitor – Anita King, an actual figure from the city’s past.” Holt’s synopsis of his other comedy for the evening, Ledge, reads, “Three hapless people, at the end of their tethers for a variety of reasons, find themselves on the same ledge at the Blue Chip Casino on the very same night at the very same moment. Will they jump? Or will something very different occur?

Susan Block is a published poet and writing workshop leader. Additionally, four of Block’s short plays were presented at Michigan City’s Footlight Theater in 2011. Block’s plays will begin at 7 pm. Block described Vanilla, her selected drama, as, “An overview of a man who lived to satisfy everyone else’s ideas about the course of his life and in the process sidestepped his own dreams.” Block’s synopsis of her comedy, Art Appreciation, reads, “A suburban matron visits an art museum and attempts to convince the man next to her that she knows something about art… and everything else!

Performers for the evening include local actors, Mary DeBoer, Glenn Silver, Steven Becker, Justin Sech, Sarah Dwight, Diana Hirsch, Vic Althoff, Sue Quiriconi, and Tim Rounds.

All times are in the Central Standard Time zone. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. Lubeznik Center for the Arts’ gallery exhibitions: Iconoclastic!, The Common Good, Ice Abstracts, and Realm of Dreams will be available for viewing before and after each play.
