Nationally Acclaimed Spoken Word Artist Set to Host Poetry Slam

lubeznik-center-for-the-artsFirst Fridays @ 5 continue at Lubeznik Center for the Arts on April 1st with a Poetry Slam hosted by writer, performer and humorist, J.W. Basilo.

Inviting both a wide range of voices and boisterous audience participation, anyone is welcome to perform, but competitors must adhere to the following rules:

  • All work must be original and of the performers’ own construction
  • No props, costumes, or musical instruments
  • You must pre-register in order to read

Previous Poetry Slam winners include Warsaw’s Stephen Henn and 14 year old Rasheed Starks of Michigan City High School in his first performance.

Returning emcee J.W. “Baz” is one of the most sought-after and compelling spoken word artists working today. His charismatic spoken word pieces have been featured on National Public Radio and in the Chicago Tribune. He’ll have his hands full this time, with an April Fool's Day crowd.

You won't want to miss this chance to cheer, boo, or even participate in this unique event. Performers should contact Janet Bloch, Lubeznik Center's Education Director at 219.874.4900 or jbloch@lubeznikcenter.org for more information, or to register.

Plan to arrive at 5:00 p.m. if you’d like to take in the evocative 100 Views of Chicago exhibition, currently in the Hyndman Gallery. The Poetry Slam will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. (central) and the exhibit will be closed to viewing once the performance begins. Refreshments will be available. Admission is free.
