An Exhibition of Wood Objects, With a Twist

Wood-Objects-exhibitAlmost a year ago, local artist Larry Jensen presented an international cast of wood turners with a simple challenge: Starting with 2 identically sized solid wood blocks measuring 6x6x3, create an original work of art from one and leave the other untouched. The results will amaze you.

Opening Friday at Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Through the Woods, Around the Block features work by 34 artists from across the United States and England. It also features indigenous WOOD from far and wide — the blocks had to be non-endangered and representative of trees in the artist’s region. Jensen says, "Showcasing the wood was important to me. The submission guidelines specify that the wood's natural grain should not be obscured by paint, dye or bleach."

Juried by renowned woodturners Cindy Drozda and David Nittmann, the resulting exhibition of wood and object will provide viewers with a thought-provoking "before and after."

Through the Woods, Around the Block will be on exhibit February 19 through April 10. An opening reception will be held Friday, February 18 from 6 until 8 p.m. (Central). Bronislaw Bak: One Hundred Views of Chicago and What Will Your Legacy Be? Margaret Burroughs Prints will open on the same evening. Admission is free.
