Students’ Art Featured on Billboards to Promote Recycling

recycling-students-2017Three students will have their artwork featured on electronic billboards in Porter County to mark America Recycles Day 2017.

St. Patrick Catholic School seventh graders Gavin Nagdeman, of Chesterton, and Sonja Mayer, of Valparaiso, and Nativity of Our Savior School eighth grader Avery Antczak, of Hobart, submitted the winning creations in the first ever America Recycles Day Billboard Design Contest, sponsored by Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction.

The solid waste district asked Porter County middle school students to help it call attention to Nov. 15, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the support of recycling programs in the United States.

The students’ designs will rotate electronically on four billboards in high impact locations during the month of November: Oct. 30 through Nov. 5, north side of U.S. 30 at Hayes Leonard Rd.; Nov. 6 through 12, south side of U.S. 30 east of State Rd. 2; Nov. 13 through 19, north side of U.S. 30 east of Joliet; and Nov. 20 through 26, east side of State Rd. 2 and one mile south of U.S. 30.

“Thank you to all students who submitted artwork,” said Donna Stuckert, district public education coordinator. “We loved seeing all of their creative pieces and appreciate their help with spreading the word."

All contest submissions are featured on the district’s website, www.PorterCountyRecycling.org.

“We hope the billboards will serve as a reminder to those who drive by that they can make a difference in the world simply by recycling,” said Stuckert.

She added that individuals with recycling questions can contact their solid waste districts. For more information on recycling in Porter County, call Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction, 465-3694.
