Alternative Spring Break Groups Arrive in NWI

unitedway_portercountyHelping others is the theme for many college students that have chosen to travel around the Midwest to volunteer during their Spring Break. The following groups contacted the United Way Regional Volunteer Center to connect them with local nonprofits needing assistance and will be lending a helping hand during the upcoming week:

A group of 38 students from the University of Iowa called Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow, will be working at the Boys & Girls Club in Valparaiso, Saturday 3/12 from 9:00-Noon.

Coming from the University of Louisville, an Interfaith group of 25 will work all week in Lake and Porter counties. Monday and Tuesday, 3/14-15, they will assist with a host of projects at Spring Valley Shelter in Valparaiso to help get it ready to open for business under new owners, Housing Opportunities. On Thursday the group will split up with half working at the Crisis Center in the Miller area of Gary and the others will be painting 2 food pantries in Gary for the NWI Food Bank.

On behalf of the entire NWI community we would like to welcome these groups of college students and thank them for the great contribution of time and hard work they are making during their Spring Break!
