Generous Donors Send Record Number of Kids to Camp in the Dunes

Summer-Camp-National-ParkIndiana Dunes National Lakeshore education partner, Dunes Learning Center is set to award a record number of summer camp scholarships this year, according to executive director Geof Benson.

In honor of Earth Day and Environmental Education Week, forty-seven “camperships,” will be granted, thanks to donations from individuals, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Campers are recommended for the program by teachers—who began making nominations back in January. In addition to qualifying nominated students based on financial need, teachers submit a short statement on behalf of the student.

“[My student] was immediately intrigued when I mentioned this in class, did more research about the camp on his own, and asked if I would recommend him," wrote one teacher. "He said he’s ready to get closer to nature and to have a break from technology!”

“She is a young lady interested in science and a future that includes college,” wrote another teacher, on behalf of a middle school student with a challenging home life. “This opportunity to grow and be independent for a week with new people and experiences would help her meet her life goals.”

The camps, each lasting 5 days and 4 nights, offer kids a respite from often stressful lives. Immersed in nature, they climb dunes, hike under the stars at night, dance around the campfire, and gain confidence with each new adventure.

Dunes Learning Center director of education Erin Crofton will begin contacting the families of nominated students this week with good news. “It is one of the best things I get to do all year,” she says.
