Shirley Heinze Land Trust Hosts a Guided Winter Hike at Ivanhoe Nature Preserve

Shirley-Heinze-Guided-TourGet rid of that cabin fever this winter and come on a winter hike led by Stewardship Director, Paul Quinlan, at Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve in Gary.

The dune and swale habitat at Ivanhoe South represents one of the rarest habitat types on the planet! A dune and swale complex is a series of roughly parallel, sandy ridges separated by low, seasonally wet, swales. This topography formed from irregular cycles of high and low water levels as the Lake Michigan shoreline retreated. These communities represent a significant concentration of biodiversity in a small area.

As parking at the preserve is limited, participants will meet at the Porter County Visitor's Center located at 1215 N State Road 49, Chesterton, IN. From there we board a shuttle bus that will take us to Ivanhoe South. We will begin loading the bus at 12:45p.m. and depart promptly at 1:00 p.m. The bus will return to the visitor's Center at 3:30 p.m.

There is a maximum of 14 participants for this hike, so reserve your seat on the bus quickly by calling the office at (219) 242-8558 or by email to jerdelac@heinzetrust.org.

This hike will be cancelled if temperatures are below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Registered hikers will receive an email notice in the event of cancellation.
