Portage Township YMCA Celebrating Our Seniors with Love

Over 100 seniors gathered at the Portage Township YMCA on Wednesday, February 14th for a free lunch provided by the Portage Township YMCA with funding by generous donors.

The “Valentine’s Day” themed afternoon was exclusive to Portage Y seniors age 50 years and older and was held in the gymnasium. Participants were invited to this free event by the Welcome Center staff and were given a classic valentine’s day card as an invitation.

In addition to the meal, which consisted of homemade mostaccioli, fried chicken, salad, rolls, and steamed veggies; seniors received a handwritten valentines card and a homemade frosted heart-shaped cookie. Carnations were also given out to the ladies. The afternoon ended with a friendly, yet competitive game of bingo.

“These special interest events are especially important” said Erin Robles, Marketing Director for the Y. “Our seniors come here for a variety of reasons, but one that tops the charts is for the socialization and friendships. Some have lost spouses and others do not have family nearby, but the Y fills that need and that is why events like yesterday’s luncheon are important.”

Special thanks to Andrea Starling, the Ys Board Chair, Fund Development Director, Jan Zurek, Wellness Coordinator, Rose Marie, Staff Members, Annette Santana and Kim Lopez for organizing the event, as well as, the staff and volunteers who helped the day of.

To date, seniors make up nearly 21% of the Ys 4,700 members. Not only does the Y offer senior rates for individuals & couples, but they also accept SilverSneaker memberships, which are free Y memberships to those that qualify.
