Superhero Lovers from All Over the Region Celebrate their Heroes at Whiting’s Superhero Saturday

The Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce and the city of Whiting joined forces to put on a special Superhero Saturday. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Spider-Man were the stars of the show on 119th Street.

Superhero lovers from all over northern Indiana and Illinois came to celebrate their heroes. Whiting Director of Events Mark Harbin said he understood the importance of coming together. The superheroes blessed Whiting with a beautiful day for a gathering.

“Just like the Avengers, when you unite, you can do special things,” Harbin said. “The feedback that we are getting at the Marvel meet and greet has been fantastic.”

Harbin listed Batman and Captain America as his two favorite superheroes. Saturday was all about the Marvel characters.

“It has been a joy to host everyone from Marvel,” Harbin said. “We had a great time, and we really look forward to doing something special next year.”

Young and old costume-clad fanatics filled the Little City by the Lake. Six-year old attendee Marcus Gomez of the Eastside was beaming with excitement to see his favorite heroes.

“All of the Avengers stuff is my favorite,” he said. “There are cool toys here, cool superheroes and there is just a lot of cool stuff.”

Gomez played with a slew of action figures, including Batman, Robin and Spiderman. But when asked who he liked the most, he did not hesitate.

“Iron Man is my favorite superhero because he wears a robot suit,” he said. “It is super-cool because it has lasers and a lot of other cool stuff. I want to meet him the most.”

Captain America said it best: This day was about the youngsters. The heroes did their good deed for the city of Whiting, and everyone celebrated.
