The annual event used to be run by the City of Portage and was carried on by private organizations once the city stopped running the event. CityPoint volunteered to do the egg hunt three years ago. Pastor Mike Hendon, a pilot himself, thought it would be a great idea to have a helicopter from Lansing Airport visit the park and drop bags of candy onto the grass. They have been doing it ever since.

“We’re always looking for ways to do things outside of the four walls of the church,” said Pastor Mike. “It’s a fun way to bless the city, and bless the kids.”

It took a lot of volunteers to make the Egg Hunt happen. People from CityPoint were tasked with distributing eggs, painting faces, handing out cocoa, and reuniting kids with their parents after the scramble for eggs. The helicopter came first; volunteers kept people a safe distance away as they watched the bird circle above.

“Make them the heroes,” said Pastor Mike of his team. “They are the heroes, not me. Let me tell you how awesome this team is, how hard they work for this town. We could not have done this without them.”

Jamie Valentis from the Portage High School ROTC attended to help out. “[The egg hunt] was good because most people don’t have the time to hang out with their families and enjoy themselves.”

Portage Kiwanis President Shannon Burhans said that, “For us personally, this is a fundraiser. We use it to give scholarships to high school seniors. For everyone else it’s a family event. Families don’t have to spend a fortune to have a good time.”

“It gets the kids outside,” said parent Rebecca Hostetter. She was glad to be able to bring her child to something fun after a long winter.

Every year the crowd around the helicopter drop off point grows bigger. More eggs are placed in the field, more cocoa brewed in the pots. CityPoint and Kiwanis look forward to another great year of Easter celebrations and community growth.
