Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County South Haven Club Members Demonstrate their Heart and Soul

BGCPC-South-Haven-Girls-on-theRun-5K-2015Ten weeks ago, South Haven Club staff member, Kristen Baker, was determined to provide the female members of her Club a program that would boost their self-esteem and confidence. After connecting with representatives of Girls on the Run, Baker implemented the “Heart and Sole” program every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 PM.

“Heart and Sole” is intended for girls in grades 6th through 8th and couples running with other activities that help this age group and youth population feel comfortable with themselves and their choices as they transcend from adolescents into adulthood. At the end of ten weeks, the girls celebrated their accomplishments by competing in a 5K race on October 31st.

“Heart and Sole is an excellent program for girls. Female Club members in this age group, at times, lack the self-esteem they need to be successful. Seeing the girls complete a 5K race at the end of this program was truly remarkable. It showed that they all had the self-esteem and determination needed to complete this run. Seeing all of them put their hearts into finishing the race truly demonstrated what ‘Heart and Sole’ is all about,” states Baker.
