Portage-High-School-SignPortage High School students earned a quarter of the Porter County Career and Technical Center’s total awarded dual credits during the 2017-2018 school year.

Portage juniors and seniors enrolled in the county’s vocational programs earned 1,118 dual credits during the 2017-2018 school year. In total, PCCTC awarded 4,407 dual credits to students from ten area high schools.

The students earned anywhere from one to 18 college credits at no cost from Ivy Tech Community College and Vincennes University. Dental Careers students earned one credit from Indiana University Northwest for $25.

Some of the institutions require a prerequisite for the dual credits; this could include taking the Accuplacer Exam, PSAT, SAT, or ACT.

PCCTC counselor Debbie Heitmann assists students with obtaining the dual credits, which often help the students earn honors and technical honors diplomas.

“We are very proud for our students to earn these dual credits and to save their parents thousands of dollars,” Heitmann said. “Frequently, our students are able to use their dual credits toward their degrees or at least as electives."

Students enrolled at the PCCTC have the opportunity to earn dual credits through a variety of vocation programs, including Auto Services Technology, CAD Animation, Criminal Justice, Criminal Investigations, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, Dental Careers, Diesel Service Technology, Early Childhood Education, Electronics, Emergency Medical Services, Entrepreneurship/Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Health Science Education 1 and 2, Horticultural Science, Precision Machining, Strategic Marketing Internship, Video Production & Media Studies, and Welding Technology.
