Portage High School Senior Wins Top Honor at Art Show

The charcoal drawing “Rare Old Master” produced a rare award for Portage High School senior Julz Lopez, who took home the Best in Show award at the Art on the Lake High School Art Show, sponsored by the Portage Art Department.

Four other Portage students took home awards from the event as well. Second place awards went to senior Briann Fravel for her sculpture titled “Slow News Day” and junior Anthony Dejsus for his charcoal drawing titled “Catch of the Day.” Honorable mentions were awarded to senior Starrmarie Ortega for her photograph titled “Within” and junior Diamond Doran for her charcoal drawing titled “Self Portrait.”

All five students are currently enrolled in art classes at the high school. Lopez recently completed the Advanced 3D Art/Portfolio class and is currently enrolled in the advanced painting and drawing IV classes.

Art on the Lake was organized by the Portage art department. Over forty pieces of artwork will remain on display through March 19 at the Indiana Regional Plan Commission building, located at 6100 South Port Road in Portage.

Jane Lohmeyer was the judge for the competition. She is a former art teacher at Portage and is currently an adjunct instructor emeritus in art at Valparaiso University.
