Portage High School Biomedical Science Students View Live Open Heart Surgery

Portage_High_School_Biomedical_Science_S-2Students in the Principles of Biomedical Science classes at Portage High School viewed a live open heart surgery on Wednesday, Feb 28, 2018. The presentation is facilitated by the Museum of Science and Industry. Students viewed a triple coronary bypass surgery being performed at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

They had the opportunity to talk to and ask questions of the personnel in the operating room about their careers and the procedure being performed. This activity is the culmination of the class heart unit where they learned the structure of the heart, blood flow through the heart, how to measure heart vital signs, effects of cholesterol on the cardiovascular system and the treatments for heart disease.
